I think of life as a succession of circles linked together; some people stay in the same circle, others jump from one to another every now and then……Hi, my name is Isabel, and I’m a “jumper”.
When my friend Ana pushed me to sing in a piano bar in the early 90’s in front of all those people (aaaaarrggg!!!), I didn’t imagine my life was gonna turn around so much. I was a worried, second year university student, who didn’t know what path lay ahead. I was offered my first job as a singer in that same piano bar in La Manga. After experiencing the excitement of singing in public, I knew then, this was my thing…..and it was only starting.
After a couple of years performing as a duo with a pianist, something told me that it was time for a jump , and I joined a jazz band called TEKOA performing with them in clubs around Murcia. Later, I moved to France where I also performed in jazz clubs, getting to know the jazz world and its weird people a little more (###^^@@$$$$>???+X ); ….. A year later I went back to Spain and continued with my old band.
1996 "change of circle" I moved to London, where I was exposed to the cosmopolitan music scene that exists there. Played with several Latin bands, which introduced me to the latino ways, did some funk, some jazz .I would get involved in any musical project that was offered to me….that’s how I met ‘Funkmasters’ Nick Bennett and Patrick Cole. With them, I wrote the song that opened up the world of electronic music to me; PASILDA was the first and only hit by AFROMEDUSA, our band.
The success of PASILDA brought AFROMEDUSA the opportunity to travel around the world performing in festivals and clubs. But the band didn’t last long……….at least as AFROMEDUSA. AFROANGEL was born of the necessity to change record company. As AFROANGEL we wrote and recorded a series of songs, one of them being MAGIC, which got signed but sadly never saw the light of day in the record shops.
Meanwhile, I was writing and recording in collaboration with various House producers and DJs, as well as performing around Europe and Latin America. One of these collaborations was a project called MAMBANA. It was the brainchild of Swedish DJ and producer Axwell and his electronic talent. Together we recorded three latin-house tracks: NO REASON, LIBRE, and FELICIDAD.
Other important ventures into the dance world produced the tracks ASI ASI and CLOROPHILLA. They came from working under the creative influence of Stonebridge and Mixmaster in Sweden. NO PARES was released by DEFECTED RECORDS. Recordings with SHRI AND BADMARSH, were among other projects from that time.
After eight and a half years living in London it was time to jump to a new circle. This jump took me to the sunny shores of Mozambique. Before this there were two other notable musical adventures; the first with the well established band BAH SAMBA, writing and recording the track CALMA with one of its members, Julian Bendall
The second, a little intervention on the backing vocals, for the track OTHER PEOPLE’S LIFES, gives its name to the latest album by RAY DAVIES.
Once in Mozambique, I started living a more relaxed life, and wrote what turned out to be my first solo album, a departure from the house world into a music that leans more towards a soulful and jazz direction, but still with a Latin twist. Ten years after parting from my first band, TEKOA ,I got in touch with one of its members, Jose Muñoz, who happened to have a recording studio and a production company in Murcia, my place of origin. Together with Jose, Alberto and Queque Belando, Trevor Kentish, and guest appearances by Emile Salvary, aka Archie, Santiago Campillo , Paco Vilches, and Pedro Cabredo, I recorded the album FREEDOM DAY, news of which will be posted on this site very soon.
The latest project I have been participating in is a tune to be released before the summer by DJ SAFFROLLA with the working title of NEAR THE SKY …..a true story…..
